Healthy and Fit Fashionistas,

CrossFit is a training program designed to build strength and body conditioning through extremely varied and challenging workouts.

This program has been copied from training’s done in police academies, tactical and military special operations units, and martial arts training. The rigid training program had its humble beginnings and burst into the scene when several law enforcement officers and members of the military overseas came together and regularly meet up to perform a series of rigid workouts.

Back in 2005, there were still no CrossFit gyms in existence. Joshua Newman remembers doing CrossFit workouts with friends at a children’s playground in Central Park while children looked on in bewilderment. This is because more often than not, the members got kicked out of gyms. “The owners complained that we were too loud and crazy.” In the beginning, when Mr. Newman helped found CrossFit in New York City in 2007, there were only 22 members, and their informal motto was “They can’t kick us out of here.”

Today, CrossFit has become a phenomenon which has found an audience of people who prefer its swagger to the monotony of treadmills and the zen of yoga. Classes last one hour and it combines the elements of Olympic weight lifting, calisthenics and gymnastics.

CrossFit is extremely different from a commercial gym, and not just because you won’t find any ellipticals, weight machines, or Zumba classes. Each day the workout will test a different part of your body for strength or conditioning, but it does not put any emphasis nor specialize in any one particular thing, but rather its goal is to build a body that is capable of practically anything and everything.

Many Hollywood celebrities have embraced this lifestyle as a way of life. Brad Pitt reportedly uses CrossFit to physically train for his more challenging roles; while Jason Statham dropped 17 pounds in just six weeks, using CrossFit workouts and a healthy diet. Now, the actor refers to his pre-CrossFit body as “doughy.” Vanessa Hudgens and Cameron Diaz are also self-declared CrossFit devotees.

Keep Fit!
